Our history
Until 2007 it was two road tunnels of the Trento bypass. Since 2008 it is a large cultural and exhibition space for a total of 6,000 square metres. A place dedicated to the telling and representation of history and the restitution of historical memories. A cultural space whose function has evolved in its experimental and innovative dimension.
The ‘reconversion’ of Le Gallerie is part of an overall project to revamp the Piedicastello suburb located at the foot of Doss Trento, an ancient human settlement that houses the Mausoleum of Cesare Battisti and the National Historical Museum of the Alpini and is separated from the centre of Trento by the Adige river and the Brenner railway.
Le Gallerie have thus grown and consolidated as a cultural space in close relationship with the suburb that hosts them and with the community living there, a relationship that has been extended to other local communities, territories and the various worlds that characterise Trentino.
Le Gallerie, first and foremost for their architectural/structural aspect and for their major multimedia exhibitions, have carved out a role and visibility at national and international level. They have been recognised and appreciated for their originality and for the great scenographic and immersive impact of the narratives proposed, but also for the quality of the curatorship of the individual projects and for their constant commitment to enhancing heritage and archives.
Since the day they were opened to the public, Le Gallerie have been managed by the Fondazione Museo Storico del Trentino, whose establishment coincides with the start of the ‘reuse’ project.
